England’s Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) are requesting specialist hubs to tackle the huge backlog in non-urgent operations. The proposed specialist hubs will be located in current NHS buildings and will be committed to non-urgent surgery all year round.

A recent BBC article has quoted that at least five million patients are on the waiting list for surgery but some believe this is much higher, especially as some patients have not been diagnosed and triaged yet or have been afraid to see someone due to the pandemic/fear factor. Either way, the independent sector providers could spring into action and help reduce patient waiting lists for surgery.

Ramesh Jassal, International Head of Healthcare commented: “Investors and strategic buyers will be on the hunt for this capacity in the market from an M&A perspective to support the NHS. This pressure will be with us for years and the market recognises that the existing capacity within the NHS will not be able to meet this future demand.”
