Clearwater International advises Skjern Paper on its sale to Sonoco

Clearwater International has advised Skjern Paper, a leading European supplier of products made from 100% recycled Nordic paper fibres, on its sale to Sonoco Products Company (Sonoco), a global packaging solutions leader.

Skjern Paper was founded in 1965 and acquired by the family holding Buur Invest in 2005. The company has grown to become a major supplier of high-grade paperboard products across Europe while retaining its leading position in sustainability initiatives. Skjern Paper’s paper mill, which is the last remaining in Denmark, has an annual production of 75,000 tonnes of paper and board, exporting more than 90% to packaging and paper companies around Europe. The company has successfully sourced local renewable energy sources, significantly reducing emissions, waste, and reliance on natural gas while utilising excess heat from production and sourcing it back to the local community of Skjern.

Sonoco is a globally active packaging group listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with more than 22,000 employees in 85 countries. This acquisition aligns with the company’s core business and purpose, to invest in sustainable paper and packaging products across Europe.
